CORAL is a 2U CubeSat developed by the S5Lab research team from Sapienza University of Rome, together with Thales Alenia Space Italia and Telespazio, under a project funded by the European Space Agency.
The mission demonstrates distributed telemetry networks and inter-satellite links (ISL) built on Internet-of-Things technologies, and carries a Software-Defined Radio used to monitor the spectrum for future ISL-based telecommand sharing. The goal is to let a group of small satellites relay each other’s telemetry rather than each waiting for its own ground-station pass.
CORAL reached orbit aboard a cargo flight to the International Space Station and was deployed from the Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo) on 3 February 2026, alongside five other CubeSats. It established contact with the Rome ground station the same day and began operations.
